Malgranda
2016
The project is a short pre-calculated virtual theater play in three acts, video-projected and video-mapped on an actual set. It was a student project for the three-week intensive assignment within the context of the first year of my Master's at Arts et Technologies de l’Image, at the Paris 8 University.
In this project, I did the crowd simulation with MiArmy and Autodesk Maya, the lighting, the script, and the artistic direction.
Alexandre Gomez did the shading and the video mapping.
The space comprises a host of characters who will confront several obstacles to succeed in absurdly achieving their goals. The objective is to play with the clumsiness potential of a crowd simulation by using the codes of the classic and primitive cinema of Méliès, Buster Keaton, and Charles Chaplin.
The mapping is used to give the possibility of playing with the scale of the crowd of characters in a natural context, to use the actual objects in the narration (resource of gags and trompe l'oeil effects), and to render volume and build an augmented virtuality context. This project's particularity is using a crowd of characters in a play's context and observing how the simulation will be managed in the actual setting. It is an immersion of the real by the virtual, a theatrical invasion of a crowd of creatures in reality.
